San Mateo County Safe Routes to School

San Mateo County Safe Routes to School

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) aims to promote walking and biking to school and improve traffic safety through the 5 E's: Education, Encouragement, Engineering, Enforcement, and Evaluation. You can learn more about Safe Routes to School on the SMFCSD website.

The YBike Program at Peninsula Family YMCA offers bike skills rodeo programs to the San Mateo-Foster City School District through a partnership with Safe Routes to School. The program teaches safety, green transportation, and great exercise through the joy of riding a bicycle.Bike skills rodeos start with a helmet fitting and lessons about safe riding, followed by cycling instruction on a play yard obstacle course. New riders will also learn the basics of balancing and have a chance to ride on two wheels. They bring all the materials and the program is open to all experience levels. By the end of the rodeo, students know hand signals, safe stopping and pacing, and how to share the road. All equipment was provided as well. Our 4th Graders had a great time learning!
